SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (General) -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Athletic Department is proud to announce the 2018 Class of the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Athletic Hall of Fame. This year's class will be inducted on February 3, 2018 and will consist of three inductees.
As SMWC continues to build its legacy and tradition, all three women have had a profound impact on their individual sports at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. They also come from three diverse programs in the athletic department.
Erin Lucas (nee Pugh) '11 was a member of the Pomeroy women's soccer team led by head coach Michael Aycock. During her career, she was a three-time United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-Academic team member and two - time USCAA First Team All-American. Erin also holds the career record in goals with 43.
"Being inducted into the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Athletic Hall of Fame is truly an honor and I am extremely humbled to be considered among all the great SMWC athletes, past and present," reflected Lucas. "I couldn't accomplish this honor without the support of so many great teammates, Coach Aycock, my family, and everyone in The Woods community. SMWC played such an integral part of my formative years and helped sculpt me into the woman I am today and I will forever consider it home."
The next inductee is Stephanie Hughes (nee Martoccio) '02. Hughes was a member of the Pomeroy basketball team led by SMWC Athletic Hall of Fame member, Deanna Bradley. As a Pomeroy, she was a USCAA First Team All-American (99-00). Hughes is a staple in the SMWC basketball record books. She holds four single game records, seven single season records, and five career records.
"After I received the news about the induction I was honored and extremely humbled. I loved my time at SMWC and playing for the Pomeroy basketball team has had a positive impact on my life," stated Hughes. "I am truly grateful for everyone who put in the time and effort to build the Athletic Hall of Fame. Since graduating in 2002, SMWC has grown and done so many remarkable things. I am proud to be associated with such a great school."
The last inductee is Jamie Thomas (nee Christopher) '02. Thomas was a member of the Pomeroy softball team led by Dennis Leek. During her career as a Pomeroy, Thomas was a prolific athlete as she was named a USCAA All-American for three years and helped SWMC win two National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) championships. She holds 13 single season hitting records and eight career hitting records. Thomas's stolen bases record of 31, set in 2001, stood for 16 years.
"I am very proud to be receiving this amazing honor," expressed Thomas.
The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2017 to recognize and pay homage to SMWC's student-athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters who give their all in the name of Pomeroy athletics.
