SMWC Men’s Golf Opens Season at Huntington

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (Men's Golf) --  Head Coach Abe Nasser and the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Pomeroy men's golf team will open their 2017-18 campaign on the road as they head to Huntington University for the Huntington University Invitational from Sept. 8-9 at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Ind.

The Pomeroys will go head to head with Huntington, Indiana University-Kokomo, Indiana University- South Bend, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and Spring Arbor University.

"We look forward to the challenge. I expect to see improvement from last season," quipped Nasser, "The team is hoping to be competitive in the event."

The Pomeroy enter the season after an amazing inaugural season in 2016-17. SMWC was led by Samuel Grimes with an average score of 82.5 per round. The "Fab Five" added three more linksmen in transfers Nathan Higbie, Colton Kuppler, and Benjamin Myers to deepen the roster.

With this being SWMC's first outing of the season, there is quite a bit of anticipation for Coach Nasser and his team. When asked about his expectations of the tournament, Nasser talked about the difficulty of having a new team and competing in unknown territory.

"We have seven players participating this weekend, five as a team and two as individuals. The team hasn't seen the golf course yet. It's always difficult to compete when going into a tournament with little local knowledge. We do our best to prepare and see what happens."

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will take to the green at noon on Friday, Sept. 8 and at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.
