Pomeroys Split Doubleheader with Shawnee State University

TITUSVILLE, Fla. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team was back in action in Florida as they faced NAIA affiliate Shawnee State University (Ohio). The Pomeroys and Bears squared off in a doubleheader and split on the day. SMWC won game one in an incredible walk-off fashion 5-4 but fell in game two of the day 2-0.


GAME ONE | VS. SHAWNEE STATE UNIVERSITY | WON 5-4

SMWC seized the victory in dramatic walk-off fashion, thanks to a walk-off walk by Mariah Stout. SSU scored first in the second inning when Morgan Rearick drove in one-run when she singled. After the Bears scored again in the top of the fifth, SMWC answered. In the bottom of the seventh, the Pomeroys found themselves down 5-1. Despite the odds, SMWC rallied and scored four runs to earn their fourth win of the season. Christian Chambers earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for the Woods going the distance. Chambers allowed eight hits, four runs, struck out two batters, and walked one. SMWC totaled eight hits in the game. Hollie Jones and Kerri Schrock collected multiple hits for the Pomeroys. Jones went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the team in hits. The SMWC defense played spectacularly as they did not commit an error.


GAME TWO | VS. SHAWNEE STATE UNIVERSITY | LOST 2-0

SMWC fell behind early and could not come back in a 2-0 loss to Shawnee State University. The Bears scored on a single by Haley Rawlins and a single by Michal Cunningham in the second inning. Pitching was tough on both sides as there were a combined 12 strikeouts in the game. Hollie Jones went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the team in hits. The SMWC pitching staff gave up ten hits in the game.

The SMWC softball team will have the opportunity to soak up the beautiful Florida sun as they have tomorrow free of contests. The Pomeroys will be back on the diamond Thursday, March 8th as they take on Penn State Hazleton and the College of St. Joseph. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
