SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. (Women's Volleyball) – It was a barnburner of a match at the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center on Tuesday night as the Pomeroys of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College went head to head with the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Fightin' Engineers. SMWC rallied in each set but couldn't keep pace with Rose-Hulman and were defeated in four sets with scores of 25-22, (25-21), 25-22, and 26-24.
There were three Pomeroys with double digit kill total leading the way for SMWC. McKenzi Kumpf was the top hitter for SMWC with 17 kills and Monica Mack added 12. Rounding out the top two was Gabriella Slagle with 10 kills of her own. Katelyn Cotter kept the table set for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods as she racked up 39 assists. Defensively, Pamela Dorman got a workout as she glided across the court for 26 digs. Kumpf followed her with 17. Mack played big up front for the Pomeroys as she snagged two solo blocks.
As a team, SMWC finished the night with 78 digs, 51 kills, 46 digs, and five service aces.
Adekite Oladipupo was the kill leader for the Fightin' Engineers as she recorded 16 kills. Oladipupo was followed by Bailee MacInnis with 14 and Grace Beach with 12. Katie Orbeta and Alison Rogozinski led Rose-Hulman in assists with 24 and 20, respectively. Defensively, Gabi Razma recorded a team-high 19 digs.
Collectively, RHIT finished the match with 71 digs, 57 kills, 48 assists, and four service aces.
The Pomeroys will be home over the weekend as SMWC hosts the SMWC Classic presented by Dorsett Automotive from Sept. 15-16. First match for Friday is set for 4 p.m. and at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
