Perfect Start to the 2018 Season

Perfect Start to the 2018 Season
TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team opened up its 2018 season this afternoon in Florida. The Pomeroys faced fellow USCAA opponents Penn State Hazleton and Carlow University at Chain of Lakes Field. SMWC continued their winning ways as they earned two victories: 2-0, 6-2.

Taylor Andrew threw an incredible game for the Pomeroys as she earned the 2-0 victory against Penn State Hazelton. Andrew surrendered zero runs over seven innings, struck out six batters, and walked one. The pitching and defense were strong on both sides. One bright spot for Penn State Hazelton was a single by Lukoskic in the second inning. SMWC collected eight hits on the day while Hollie Jones and Andrew each had multiple hits.

SMWC took the lead late in the game in a 6-2 victory over Carlow University. The game was tied 2-2 with the Pomeroys up-to-bat in the top of the eighth when an error scored one-run. The Woods started in the first inning when Baylee Waters grounded out, scoring one run. Carlow knotted the game up at two in the bottom of the fourth inning. Abby Tatgenhors singled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs. Christian Chambers earned the win for SMWC in the circle. Chambers allowed just five hits and two runs over seven innings while she struck out one. Kelsey Young threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Abby Stroud endured the loss for Carlow. She went eight innings, allowing five runs on 12 hits, striking out three and walking one. SMWC racked up 12 hits on the day. Waters, Kerri SchrockHollie Jones, and Kindra Gingerich each racked up multiple hits. Waters went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the team.

Head Coach Mark Feller said,"I thought our pitching was outstanding today! Taylor Andrew went the distance the first game allowing four hits over seven innings and no runs score. I think she really set the tone for the day. Christian Chambers also pitched great today. She went seven innings allowing eight hits and two runs scored. And freshman Kelsey Young was brought in the bottom of the eighth, got in a bit of a jam walking her first two but settled in to retire the next two batters, the second an inning-ending double play to end the game. Feller added, "Game conditions were brutal today with 20 MPH winds blowing straight-in. Every play was an adventure for the girls!! Kelsey Young and Malerie Higginbotham played well, both had a few jitters to start the day but will grow into their roles as the season progresses. Overall, a pretty good day. Moving into tomorrow, I would like for us to be a little more patient at the plate working the count a bit more and swinging at pitches we can drive into the gaps."

20 | The Pomeroys tallied a total of 20 hits today

2 | The Woods gave up only 2 earned runs on the day

| SMWC has now won 7 straight games including last year's final five

The Pomeroy softball team will be back in action Monday, March 5th, against Rochester College and Benedictine College. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
