TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team continued their spring break play in Florida this morning. The Pomeroys squared up against Rochester College (Mich.) and Benedictine College (Kan.). SMWC split on the day after a loss to the RC Warriors in Game One: 5-3 and a victory against the BC Ravens in Game Two: 8-5.
GAME FLOW | VS. ROCHESTER COLLEGE | LOSS 5-3
SMWC observed the game slip away early and could not recover in a 5-3 loss to the Rochester College Warriors. GAME FLOW | VS. BENEDICTINE COLLEGE | WON 8-5
The Pomeroys grabbed a late lead and defeated Benedictine College 8-5. In the top of the seventh inning, St. Mary of the Woods Pomeroys tied the game after Kerri Schrock singled on the first pitch to score one-run. The game was tied at four with SMWC up-to-bat in the top of the eighth when Kindra Gingerich singled on a 2-1 count which scored two runs. BC did happen to score four runs in the third inning, but the Pomeroys managed to pull out the victory. Taylor Andrew earned the win for the Woods. Andrew went the distance; she allowed ten hits and five runs while striking out eight. SMWC strung together 12 hits in the game. Hollie Jones, Schrock, and Kelly Combs all managed to get multiple base knocks. Jones went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the team.
Pitcher Taylor Andrew said, "I am so proud of our team today. We had a tough loss this morning but came back ready to play. The first game we scored three runs in the first and second inning then could not quite string our hits together. The second game we came to play and quickly put three runs on the board while the other team responded with four. We were down 4-3 in the seventh inning but kept fighting. We fought to the seventh and came out with a victory! Hoping for some more victories tomorrow!"
